Description
Not only the technique marks the uniqueness of this piece—the covered vase was cut out of a single stone—but also the dense, rather flurried decoration. It shows five-clawed dragons in thick clouds hunting the burning pearl, symbol of attained contentment, and was intended for the imperial court. Stones of outstanding purity and uniform coloring were reserved for the imperial court, which is why the term “imperial spinach-green jade” became prevalent. (Wieninger, Johannes)
