Description
“In the metal workshop we were excited by the possibilities afforded by the use of perforated sheet-iron, sometimes with glass inserts, to manufacture a great number of simple objects. Our fruit-bowls, cups, flower-pots and sugar- and biscuit-jars often had very appealing motifs which we could not vary often enough, which were highly suitable for country life and the simple household, and which sold very well,” (Josef Hoffmann: Autobiography, Peter Noever and Marek Pokorný, eds., 2009). Perforated sheet metal was an ideal material for the geometric objects that are estimated to date from the early years of the Wiener Werkstätte. However, it must be said that “simple households” couldn’t afford these quite expensive, “simple” iron or silver sheet metal works. Today the customer logs of the Wiener Werkstätte reveal that these formally radical objects were purchased primarily by the wealthy. (Schmuttermeier, Elisabeth)
