"White ground" (jishiro 地白).
Since the performance of Matsumoto Kōshirō IV in a raincoat with kōraiyagōshi 高麗屋格子 in the kabuki play “Suzugamori”, this grid pattern has come into fashion. Kōraiya 高麗 屋 is the house name of Kabuki actor Matsumoto Kōshirō IV (1737 – 1802).
