William Arthur Smith Benson, who was closely allied with England’s Arts and Crafts movement, designed all manner of metal objects for the table as well as lighting fixtures for use with the energy sources of oil, gas and electrical power. He thought it important to employ simple, minimally decorated shapes that revealed underlying constructions. In electric lighting fixtures, cables were to be routed visibly in order to indicate the energy source, as one sees quite clearly in this wall arm. Contrary to the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement, W. A. S. Benson did employ machines in the production of his designs in cases where they could aid workers without dominating the work processes in question. This wall arm is designed as a stylized plant, with the light bulb sockets made to look like calyxes hanging from the individual tendrils. (Schmuttermeier, Elisabeth)
