Description
Dating from 1900, this étagère signed by Émile Gallé was acquired in 1968 from a private Viennese collection to serve as a typical example of French art nouveau furniture. The frame and the shelf edgings are carved from pear wood and partly mimic curved, vegetal forms; the marquetry (inlaying) on the visible sides of the shelves, which uses various types of wood, depicts floral and figurative motifs or landscapes. Gallé was one of the most well known craftspeople in the art nouveau movement. Like many of his glass artworks, this étagère reveals a clear Japanese influence, which can be seen for example in the asymmetrical structure of the piece, the way that the vegetal carvings resemble bamboo plants, and the distinctive molding of the top shelf.
