Description
-
During the First World War, people followed the call to donate unneeded metal objects in exemplary fashion. These objects were to be melted down to finance military equipment as well as the construction of hospitals for disabled soldiers. Experts from various museums designated a wide variety of objects with a total weight of 2,000 tons as worthy of preservation. These were spared from being melted and brought together from collection points throughout the monarchy at the art department of the Patriotic War Metal Collection
beginning on 1 July 1915 and exhibited in the ballroom of the officers’ mess on Schwarzenbergplatz in Vienna. Various museums in Vienna were able to purchase exhibition pieces from the collection, which they took possession of in 1923.
