Description
-
Around the turn of the century, the museum acquired numerous works by students of the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts as well as by students of the Austrian trade schools. In this context, various objects passed from the Fachschule für Holzbearbeitung [Trade School for Woodworking] in Bozen/Bolzano, South Tirol to the museum
including several backrests from chairs, some of which had been done after older models in order to cultivate local traditions. In the case of this particular backrest, traditional elements of rustic chairs—such as the heartshaped cutout for use as a handle—connect with the contemporary forms of the plant stems and of the leaves to structure and frame the surface. In 1903, the museum’s thendirector Arthur von Scala showed various such works in wood as a traveling exhibition aimed above all at communities where wood-related trade schools and industries were located, with the exhibited objects having been chosen both for instructional purposes and to demonstrate outstanding workmanship.
