This shaker is among the Wiener Werkstätte’s earliest products and one of Josef Hoffmann’s most radical designs. At the time, the idea of lending an individual face to a trivial object was something entirely new. This piece stands in the tradition of English silversmiths as they worked around 1900, a tradition to which Hoffmann also alluded in 1902 in the table centerpieces and trophies
he designed for Viennese silversmithing firms. The shaker’s smooth walls, formed into three segments sporting altogether twelve carnelians, plus the geometric pattern of holes on the lid, allow one to realize why such groundbreaking early products are now prized the world over. Striking is also the perfection with which this piece of tableware is worked. This pepper-paprika shaker was owned by the Wittgenstein family, whose numerous members were among the Wiener Werkstätte’s first customers.
