Franz Schrotzberg (1811–1889) became famous for his portraits of the Viennese aristocracy in general and Empress Elisabeth in particular. This portrait of a lady in Biedermeier costume from 1838 is probably one of the first portraits in his extensive oeuvre; it contrasts entirely with his later sweetly flattering portraits of almond-eyed women. This realistic painting expresses the entire palette of Viennese Biedermeier fashion: it shows a woman in her forties with a narrow waistline typical of the mid-1830s with very wide and extremely puffy sleeves and a voluminous silk skirt. Casually thrown around her shoulders, the loose scarf with Oriental embellishments—known as a “Viennese scarf” or “Turkish scarf” due to its bold colors—is typical for the period and its color contrasts well with the earth-colored crinoline. A black bonnet is tied into the chignon: yet more evidence that the woman was fashionable.
